Shelbyville history:
When Bedford County was divided to create Lincoln and Moore Counties, the remaining portion of Bedford County had no county seat. The legislature determined there should be a new city founded to be the county seat. It should be near the center of the county. Shelbyville was established by the legislature in 1809 with space reserved from the beginning for a county courthouse and jail. Shelbyville was named to honor Colonel Issac Shelby, a well-known politician of the area.
